What Should You Expect For Your Entry Fee?

This is my 10th season doing triathlons in the Houston Area. I am somewhere around the 60+ races completed. I think over the years that I have come to appreciate more and more the effort it takes to put on a good triathlon. With prices on entry fees going up (at least in many races) I wonder what an athlete should expect for a $60+ entry fee for a sprint tri, $100+ for Olympic and $120+ for Half dist races? I think most people would agree that a nice venue is always a great asset to any race, which can make the experience more enjoyable, but in the end I think safety is paramount. I recently did a 1st annunal race which I told myself I would never do since a bad experience 2 years ago at a 1st annual tri which was pure chaos. But since the tri was convienient for my calendar I figured I would do it. Once again I was very disappointed and decided it should have been called the "Homemade Triathlon" because it contained "confusion" "lack of safety" and low quality support before and after the race. I hesitate sometimes to make comments about races because I don't want to sound like a complainer or overly picky. I am listing my top 9 things I expect from a local race. There are only a few races that I have done year after year that have all 9 and will say that though some have a higher price tag on entry there are some that are still in the $60 range. (which is about as low as it goes in our area)
1. A safe race. A safe race includes a safe venue in the swim, bike and run legs. Swim - I am not into cutting my feet going into the water or coming out, I think there should be adequate rescue personel and at least decent water quality.
Transition area - What is the surface like? Is it slippery when soaking wet athletes have it puddled up? I had a bad slip 2 years ago on painted arrow in parking lot that was like ice when wet. Leaving pool swims can be dangerous as well since the breeze ways are often very slick when wet. (At the least give athletes warning) Is the transition grass? Is it full of grass burrs? What ever the surface it should be bare feet friendly. Are the racks spaced enough to get passed someone without a head on?
Bike - Of all legs this can be the most perilous, is the course clearly marked? I think there should "always" be an escort (Who KNOWS THE COURSE WELL) for the lead bike rider. This is usually a motorcycle volunteer who with hazard lights on notifies "sleeping cops" that the race has begun and to be on alert. Yes I know we are supposed to know the course well but this can be very difficult for athletes coming from out of town that are not familiar with the area. Unless cones go the entire course make sure turns have GOOD signage or volunteers. Red light or 4 way intersections should be manned by police (preferrably not sitting in their car). Expansion joints that are un-marked can spell major crash as well as loose gravel on turns. Bike dismount into loose gravel once again not safe and bare feet and loose rocks do not mix.
Run - Avoid crossing any traffic if possible and make sure surface is not slippery and if in grass mark "chuck holes" since twisted ancles not fun.
2. A variety of packet pick up opportunities in different places. Houston is a big place and it takes time and gas to get a packet, options are great.
3. A nice venue, a place that has a spacious transition, without mud, stickers or sharp rocks very good, clean water and scenery can be a plus and runs that include either shade or trail is nice. Bike course that is not constant turns and safe from traffic. And most important plenty of port a potties or restrooms.
4. Volunteers and race support such signage, and water stops.
5. After race refreshments! I paid $80 once for a race and I got (1) baked potatoe, tap water from water cooler and I had to ask for fruit which was in boxes not even set out. It is always great to have a variety of foods there are at least 4 races that I can think of in our area usually have the best eats and some of them are very reasonable entry fees. A variety of beverages from Coke, to Gatorade to Muscle Milk is always awesome. (Oh yah make sure cold water is available AT FINISH LINE)
6. Timely award ceremonies. I feel privileged when I have placed or won a title, but even athletes have to mow their grass! I know that everyone should be given the opportunity to finish but sometimes it seems the results are ready and sometimes it just drags on and on.
7. Meaningful awards. When I won my first age group title 3rd place (10 years ago) I must say I was pretty happy. I was a little disappointed however with my 4x6" plaque (I won 1st the next year and it was the same plaque). I know people think it's vanity, but a unique, colorful or "cool" trophy can be nice especially when you are getting one for the first time. Since then I have been blessed to win several overall titles and though I keep a few trophies in office for conversation pieces most are stacked in the corner of our computer room. What is meaningful now is that many R.D's. offer comped entries to the next years race. Wow this is so nice. (I wish all races did this at least for O.A winners, Masters winners as well as age group winners) It is a good way to keep a good field it shows appreciation and for those triathletes with a family making less that $250K like me and it helps on the pocket book. Other great prizes include gift certificates, free massages or buckets of Heed or other suppliments.
8. Accurate timing- Not sure R.D's have any control over this but it seems many times I never get all my splits, but just the finish time.
9. Results posted on-line in timely mannerI'm sure I could have found #10 somewhere but I will leave that one for someone else. There are some really good races that will always be on my calendar, then there are some that need improvement and I only do because of convienience and there are some I will never do again. I am grateful I can compete and grateful for those R.D's who go the extra mile to make races that are both safe, fun and rewarding. Cheers!

FYI

Depending on where you go to get information or get race date, there are some very bad links on your website and other tri websites. If you go to Tri OnTheRun website calendar, it says 7/22. The J&B information page on your website http://www.houstonracing.com/jb/ has the active.com link to the the 2011 event. The link on the active.com website takes you to http://www.houstonracing.com/jbit/ which has a july 12, 2009 date.

I almost registered thinking it was the july 22 date, I backed out at last minute when I decided to verify the date one last time since I am a rotating shift worker and often work on weekends.

LocoRunner

Hi, all:

I'm competing in Ironman Texas in the Woodlands next weekend (my first Ironman). My boyfriend will come and watch, and he's also going to come with me to the welcome dinner on Thursday that precedes the required race information session.

My question for the vets is if I should splurge and get him a VIP ticket for Saturday because it's already going to be a long day, and that way he won't worry about food and such. He is a cyclist, so he may also want to get out and ride a bit once I'm long gone, but I see that they are come-and-go passes.

Has anyone else had friends or fam use the VIP tickets? Are they worth it or a letdown? Also, did you have someone come with you to the welcome dinner? Was that a good decision, or were they bored and the food wasn't worth it?

Thanks!

We are losing some living space and I can no longer set this up in the computer room.
